Pete Carling (b. 1967) is a British sculptor whose work explores the raw character of found materials such as Portland stone, railway sleepers, and reclaimed slate. The son of antiques dealer Roger Carling, Pete was influenced early on by antique furniture; the craftsmanship, soul and eye of George Nakashima and the exuberance of Wendell Castle. He earned a First-Class Honours degree in Furniture Design and Craftsmanship in 1999, with two special commendations. From 2000 to 2023, he created distinctive art furniture before turning fully to sculpture. Now based in Exmoor National Park, his work has recently been exhibited at RHS Rosemoor (2024/25) and is gaining wider recognition for its balance of form, texture, and material history. His most recent works will now move North to “The Limes Art Gallery” in Weeton Yorkshire.
