Kate Semple is a ceramicist based in York. Working with traditional hand-building techniques—slab, pinch, and coil—she creates sculptural vessels from clay and paper, exploring the interplay of light, shadow, and form.

Originally trained in illustration and graphic design, Kate developed her ceramics during the pandemic, when working with clay became both a creative outlet and a source of solace. Deeply influenced by an upbringing surrounded by antique ceramics and craftsmanship, her work reflects a sensitivity to material and process.

Working across both paper and clay, Kate creates sculptural vessels that sit between disciplines, where material experimentation and a sensitivity to form result in quietly expressive, tactile objects. With an interest in the relationship between both materials and how one informs the other Collections often integrate the two disciplines with a focus form and how the pieces interact.

This interplay was evident in her recent collection for Toast, where she also and led a virtual, recycled paper vessel workshop, sharing her process and love of creating something beautiful from the discarded.
