Jo Taylor has justly been described as one of ‘the great equestrian interpreters of our age’.

Since graduating from Leeds Metropolitan University in 1991 she has become well known for her expressive and dynamic paintings and drawings of horses. Her love for these graceful creatures started at a young age and they continue to be an important part of her daily life. When not painting and drawing she may be found riding in the hills around her Lancashire home.

Working on a large unrestrictive scale Jo uses mixed media, that is using drawing and painting materials alongside collage, to build the horse from the inside out. Her style is deliberately abstract with a bold use of colour. Her palette is scoured from the immediate landscape and the elements, reminiscent of the work of Prunella Clough and Graham Sutherland. Through her materials she describes muscle tensions and structures, which she was able to study during her residency at the Department of Veterinary Science at Liverpool University. This left Jo with an exceptional knowledge and understanding of animal physiology, leading The Times Art Critic Rachel Campbell Johnson to liken her use of anatomy to Stubbs.

These insights give Jo Taylor an understanding that is translated into paintings which contain a sculptural dynamism where the essence of the horse is exposed.

Alongside her large scale paintings and drawings Jo has also been working with Master Printmaker Kip Gresham at The Print Studio Cambridge on limited edition original prints which are available to view (by appointment) and purchase  from The Gallery at the Limes.
